Hungarian agriculture in 2006

The professionals of the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (KSH) begin their article with positioning the agricultural and food sector in the national economy. They present the macro-economic indicators of agriculture and the major characteristics of growing of the particular crops. They outline the changes of sales, buying-up prices and production costs, as well as of production factors (crop area, land use, labour use, supply in means of production, etc.).

How much does land use supporting moisture and soil conservation help?

In connection with the droughty period in spring 2007, the author draws the attention to moisture conservation tillage and to the adverse impacts of soil condition problems affecting moisture regime in the soil. In order to mitigate damages caused by drought, she mentions simple methods and techniques that require professional implementation by the grower, such as proper stubble management, preparing small surface for water loss, establishing soil cover, basic tillage of appropriate depth and method suited to soil conditions. She highlights the differences between good and wrong stubble management. She points out the mistakes made in basic tillage during the autumn in the previous year, which greatly contributed to moisture loss in the soil. Finally she informs on the ways of to conserve soil moisture.

The author presents how the fields with winter barley, winter wheat, rye, triticale and spring barley look like in May in the mirror of weather conditions in spring, and what yields can be expected.

Where does wheat quality begin and where is the end of science?

Wheat market requires different crop quality year by year from growers, depending on the prevailing conditions and demands. However, one criterion is constant: quality should be uniform, and the commodity supply at that quality should be as big as possible. The author is seeking the answer to questions such as: Is Hungarian wheat of good quality? Do we need quality wheat or do we satisfy with mass products? What does wheat quality mean? Finally, the author presents the factors influencing wheat quality.

Dry winter followed by droughty spring

The debate on the existence and effects of the global climate change is still going on among the investigators. There are ones who believe that recent events are still included in the extreme values of weather changing, while others consider them the obvious effects of climate change. In connection with this topic, the author gives an account of weather conditions in the past winter and spring, their impact on crop production and the success of pest management. Finally, he gives his opinion about the consequence of all these for the future.

About measuring volume weight of maize

Last October the European Union provided for certain quality conditions of intervention buying-up, influencing maize price. The authors inform on one of these factors, i.e. volume weight. They present the tools of measuring volume weight, the formulas recommended for their determination and the effect of the particular factors on the volume weight of maize hybrids.

News and information about the recently established Cheminova Hungary Ltd.

The situation of Hungarian farms and holdings based on the data obtained between 2001and 2005 in pilot farms of the Agricultural Economics Research Institute (AKI).

The Agricultural Economics Research Institute has been following with attention the changing results of agricultural production since 2001 in the frame of an information system of agricultural pilot farms in Hungary. Collecting and presenting the results of the domestic farms can allow growers to increase the profitability of their land. The author compares the data on private farms, companies and partnerships, then evaluates the estates according to size categories. The conclusions drawn from the data are not missing either.

Quadris-award for the best winemakers

Quadris Wine Competition was organised for the sixth time for vine-growers and winemakers using the pesticide Quadris. On the ceremonial announcement of the results following the competition, the produced wines were available to the participants, so the competitors themselves could have a view of the evaluators’ judgment. Syngenta’s initiative for creating a new tradition can be a good example for distributors representing other manufacturers.

The Association of Hungarian Plant Breeders has renewed

After its establishment in 1989, the Association of Hungarian Plant Breeders has achieved significant results in various fields, and could reach under the changed social-legal conditions that they continued operation not giving up its fundamental goals: it has become a non-profit company and established a Foundation. Year by year they organised plant breeding meetings and supported the Plant Breeding Days organised by the Plant Breeding Committee of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. On the assembly of the Association held early in the year, the members elected a new management and a supervisory board.

The main characteristics of the sprayer, its structure and operation are described in the article, indicating the main technical data in a tabulated form. The specialist of the Hungarian Institute of Agricultural Engineering presents the objective, conditions and results of the laboratory and field tests carried out with this sprayer. He also discusses the results of such tests, among them the most important parameters for output, working quality, energy use and operation. The article finishes with the mentioning testing experiences and the recommendations for users.

A conference on agri-genetics and biomass was organised linked to the XIVth Animal Husbandry and Farmers’ Days in the Great Hungarian Plain in the ‘Takács Frenc Innovation and Training Centre’. The aim of the meeting was to support and coordinate research in biology, agriculture, food processing and environment. Our correspondent reports on the details of the event.

In late April, the competition ‘Innovative Young Farmer of 2007 was announced in a press conference at the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. Its aim is to select 5 young Hungarian farmers who will participate in the competition called by the European Council of Young Farmers (CEJA) for 2007, in order to find the Young European Farmer of the Year.
