The effect of different levels of ragweed infestation on sunflowers
(Dr. Péter Varga, Dr. Gabriella Kazinczi, Dr. Imre Béres, Dr. Imre Kovács)
Weeds cause difficult problems year by year for sunflower growers. Broadleaf weeds impose a risk in particular because of the herbicide sensitivity of sunflower, allowing hardly any possibility for in-crop application of chemicals. Ragweed, due to its strong competitiveness, may cause significant yield loss both in rainy and dry seasons. The efficacy of chemical weed control is highly influenced by environmental factors. This is why the authors established a trial on plant competition in a sunflower field in spring 2005 and 2006 in order to study the effect of different ragweed populations on the crop height and yield of sunflowers.
