TOPIC OF THE MONTH
The effect of intervention on the Hungarian cereal sector between 2004 and 2008
(Dr. László Rieger, Dr. Gyula Szőke)
The authors from the Hungarian Agricultural and Rural Development Agency (MVH) analyse the effect of intervention buying-up of cereals on the domestic cereal sector from the country’s EU accession to the present. Cereal intervention in Hungary can be divided basically to two parts. The first two years were characterised by buying up cereals, while in the period between 2006 and 2008, the selling of intervention stocks became predominant. Hungarian cereal intervention had a lasting effect not only on the domestic cereal sector but also on the cereal policy of the European Union. Due to the conspicuously intensive intervention buying up and the increasing intervention stocks between 2004 and 2006, the EU set the goal of restricting interventions. The article finishes with the conclusions about the effect of the definite termination of interventions and the application of the current level of intervention prices on growers.

Using plant resistance in crop growing
(Zoltán Pap, Andrea Tóbiás)
Plant as an organism is not completely defenceless against pathogens, but continuously protects itself with various immune reactions, i.e. plants are capable of self-defence. The general resistance of plants can be used in plant protection, as it can be induced not only by pathogens but also by applying materials of natural origin. The authors from Budapest Corvinus University discuss the topic in details.
Phase III mushroom compost gaining grounds in Hungary

5-aminolevulinic acid in agricultural crops
The use of 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) in growing various crops is spreading also in Europe. The product, in addition to increasing crop quality and quantity by enhancing chlorophyll production, is efficient also in protecting the environment. It improves the efficacy of fertilizer absorption and by that, less amounts of the applied fertilizers are accumulated and leached in the soil and waters.
Enhanced photosynthesis, more resistant plants (x)
PENTAKEEP-V, a new foliar fertilizer containing 5-aminolevulinic acid, is recommended for growers to use in order to increase chlorophyll content of leaves and enhance nutrient uptake of plants.
