The article gives an account of the season 2008-2009 for rapes, as well as of the expected yields throughout the European Union and the particular counties of Hungary. It can be concluded that a significant yield loss is foreseen at national level, but due to the increase of the commercial growing area, a considerable volume of commodity stocks will be produced.

The paper presents the losses in weight and chemical composition caused by western corn rootworm, cotton bollworm and corn borer. The author discusses the feasibility of a single or eventually multiple insecticide application justified in seed maize and sweetcorn production, dealing also with their optimum timing. In addition, we may get to know whether additional costs of pest management recurring in feed maize growing are repaid or not.

The ragweed phenomenon – as I see it

The author points out that it is necessary to change the current practice of coordinating ragweed management in Hungary, as the planning and implementation of the control is strictly a plant protection problem. This is why this process can be successful only if carried out by professionals skilled and experienced in this field. The author presents an experiment to demonstrate that chemical treatment provides better results against ragweed than obligatory mowing and stem chopping. Furthermore he informs on the attempts done for the detection of larger ragweed spots by remote sensing technique. Finally, the article highlights the role of the civil society in solving the ragweed problem.

Passing round the topic, the author lets us see how reasonable it was to create a system for the living nature. This refers to both the beneficial and harmful organisms, including micro-organisms of the fauna and the flora. It is much easier to follow and get to know the life cycle of species included in a system, and the control of the noxious species can be more successful as well.

HORSCH Maschinen GmbH, well-know also in Hungary about its robust cultivation and drill machines, celebrated its 25th anniversary on 15 May where our journal, invited by the Hungarian distributor, Axiál Kft., was also represented. The jubilee provided a good opportunity for the company to give an account for the numerous professionals participating on the event of the recent developmental results in a machine show taken place before the evening gala. Our correspondent reports on what was seen and heard there.
Vogel&Noot inaugurated a new manufacturing plant in Hungary. Report

Vogel&Noot Landmaschinen GmbH & Co KG established a new factory again in Hungary that was inaugurated on 8 June 2009 in the presence of the international press in Törökszentmiklós. The journalists coming from 19 countries of Europe could get acquainted with the new manufacturing plant covering 7.6 ha and could see it in operation. Almost the whole product range of the company was displayed on the factory-yard. Perhaps the most interesting part of the programme was the field show of machines close to the factory where the interested correspondents could have a close experience about the recently developed V&N machines, the quality and performance of their work.

This is a summary of the scheme of mitigating agricultural losses considered as the key rules by the Agricultural and Rural Development Agency.
The new conditions of the national scheme of mitigating agricultural damages in force from 2009
The detailed rules of operating the scheme of mitigating agricultural damages are determined by the Act 101 of 2008 on the national scheme of mitigating agricultural damages and contribution to damage mitigation, as well as by the Ministerial Decree 32/2009. (III. 31.) FVM on the procedure of mitigating agricultural damages. The paper covers the most important elements of the above pieces of legislation with special attention to the provisions different from the previous practice and introduced in 2009.
