The author presents the background of the financial crisis and its effect on the liquidity of sole proprietorships and enterprises in Hungarian agriculture. Subsidies to purchasing agricultural machines (2007-2009)

Some 102.6 thousand million Hungarian forints were paid for supporting machine purchases between 2007 and 2009 in the frame of the measures for “Modernizing agricultural holdings”. An EU directive provides for the national review of the particular active substances and products together with legal harmonisation to be carried out to a certain deadline. As a result of the Hungarian review, the number of active substances has decreased in every field of use as more ones have been withdrawn than placed on the market as a new active. The number of acaricides, soil insecticides and bactericides has decreased to a critical level, though their original number was also very low. The second part of the article outlines the foreseen consequences of the reduced range of active substances in plant protection and the options for replacing the missing products.
