TOPIC OF THE MONTH
For the diversity of our crops with plant breeding
(Dr. János Matuz)
The economic interest of each sector of agriculture and forestry related to crop production is to continuously maintain and expand biological bases. The safest and most efficient way to do this is to keep the achievements and go on in Hungarian plant breeding. First of all, domestic plant breeding can produce new varieties suitable for our landscape, climate and the requirements of the Hungarian growers, users and consumers. The author presents various examples for this from the past decades, summing up the biological bases of growing field crops, fruits, grapes, vegetables, medicinal plants, ornamentals, and forestry species, as well as of making wines.

Using every means of controlling Fusarium disease …
(Dr. Pál Békési)
Yes, we are aware that growers have done their best in the recent period against head blight of winter wheat. In optimum time with sufficient spray volume and appropriate nozzle, growers tried to cover the total surface of the ears with spray. Now with this article we wish to draw the attention to that the control programme has not finished with the in-crop treatments with fungicides. In other words, let’s prepare for harvesting the ripe crop as soon as possible, cleaning it thoroughly, loading to stores at an appropriately low (less than 14 %) moisture content and ventilation if necessary.
