Growing alternative crops
(Dr. Lajos Blaskó)
The profitability of growing alternative crops can be significantly improved by exploiting the opportunities of their special uses. Now we present you certain characteristic examples (expanding food offer, uses by industry, pharmaceutics and cosmetics and bio-energy production) in order to arouse your interest.

The importance of alternative crops in food supply
(Ms F. Léder)
The various food products of cereal bases, in particular wheat, maize and rice have a significant role in our everyday nutrition. However, the use of the so-called alternative crops offers an additional opportunity for producing food of higher nutritional value and for improving the diversity of our foodstuffs. The author summarises the methods of using them by food industry and their nutrition-physiological characteristics.

Buckwheat and its growing
(Dr. István Gondola)
Spring-sown crops can get a higher priority in 2011 than before. The importance of buckwheat in this respect is given by the fact that the plant can be sown at any time from May to mid-July, adjusting to the rate of drying of the soil. Its insertion into the cropping structure increases field diversity and expands the choice of healthy food. We publish the key criteria of growing this crop to allow that these opportunities be materialized.

The nutrient value of buckwheat
(Ms F. Léder)
The special nutritional values of buckwheat are presented in the article. Each part of the plant can be used for different purposes and due to its excellent protein composition and high mineral content the range of food that can be produced from the crop is wide.

Sorghum and its growing
(Dr. Éva Babett Ábrahám)
The author presents the origin, geographical distribution, economic importance and ecological requirements of sorghum. Furthermore, she discusses the corner points of the management programme ensuring the successful growing of this crop (crop rotation aspects, nutrient supply, soil preparation, sowing, cultural operations and harvesting.

The nutrient value of sorghum
(Ms F. Léder)
The investigator of the Central Food Research Institute draws readers’ attention to the nutritional values of the fifth most important cereal of the world, i.e. sorghum. The use of this crop for human consumption has been insignificant in Hungary, though this is a basic material of food suitable for puffing and extruding and can be well used in gluten-free diet.

Jerusalem artichoke, the newly discovered plant (1)
(Dr. Sándor Hodossi, Dr. Zoltán Győri, Dr. László Dudás)
The article focuses on Jerusalem artichoke, a crop known for a long time and suitable for persons suffering from diabetes. However it is grown only on a small surface and has an insignificant share in human diet. Now readers may get to know the past and present situation of growing the crop in Hungary, the options for using it, as well as the chemical composition and nutritional values of the plant.

In late winter before starting pruning we need to know the amount and quality of buds on our fruit trees. The examination of the buds at the end of the winter is, at the same time, the first step of assessing yields. Fruit buds are of primary importance from the point of view of the current year’s yields and are more susceptible to frost damages than leaf buds as well. This is why the article focuses on the formation and development of fruit buds, as well as on the method of examining buds of pome and stone fruit plants.
