Again a National Fair of Agriculture and Food Industry! Talk with dr. Péter Simon, director of Agricultural Marketing Centre (AMC)
(Dr. László Bódis)
The last National Fair of Agriculture and Food Industry (OMÉK) was organised in 2005. Since that time the regional exhibitions in Hódmezővásárhely, Kaposvár, Debrecen and Bábolna have gained more importance and practically have taken over the role of OMÉK. This year with the absence of Bábolna there has become a gap. OMÉK presumably wishes to fill it. Or even more? We have asked the director of Agricultural Marketing Centre (AMC) about this.

Wheat research gaining more importance abroad
(Dr. Zoltán Bedő, Dr. László Láng)
Wheat has always been and will be a staple food plant not only in our country but also abroad (of course, its role as a feed crop is not negligible either). This is why more and more attention is drawn to international wheat research and Hungary also takes part therein. This is what the first article of the present cereal block informs on.

Thoughts about the seed treatment of cereals. Which pests to control?
(Dr. György Kis, Dr. Gábor Princzinger, János Kendi)
We think it would not be in vain to look around in the archives of Agrofórum and time to time to re-publish a forgotten or one or two-decade old papers. Either because it is timely even in our days, or because that time the author was of completely different opinion than today. At first we offer readers detailed discussions of seed treatment being the most important means of targeted crop protection and cost-saving pesticide use.

Let’s learn gene technology (15) Producing multi-gene transgenic (GM) varieties
(Dr. László Heszky)
In this part of the series on learning biotechnology we present the production of multi-gene varieties and hybrids. This approach (stockpiling of genes), among them gives an opportunity for triggering the biosynthesis of special molecules by the transfer of genes taking part in biosynthesis even in such plant species that have been unable for that.

(István Balla, Péter Gergő Kovács)
This June the interested could visit Mosonmagyaróvár to take part in a TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) event titled ‘Forestry and Agricultural Production, as well as Technologies for renewing energy resources and climate change’. The topic of the lectures was crop production as a resource of bio-energy and climate change. The report lets us have an insight into the most important ideas expressed at the meeting.

Splitting of nutrients and timing of fertilizer application in outdoor vegetable growing
(Dr. István Terbe)
The importance of timing of fertilizer application and the criteria of splitting fertilizer rates are negligible compared to the quantity and quality of the applied fertilizers. However, they would require much higher attention, considering the nature of vegetable crops where the different nutrient demands of almost fifty vegetable species, season length, production targets and production system require different application of fertilizers. This is why we believe it is worth having a closer look at this topic. The article gives a good opportunity for doing that.

Why do apples need calcium spraying?
(Dr. László Szalay)
Spraying fertilizers to fruits in addition to foliar fertilizer application has a long history in fruit crop production. However, in up-to-date orchards, in certain crops, this is not an additional technique but an integral part of the crop production programme. An example for this is calcium treatment of apples at an early stage of fruit development. Why is it needed? We study the question, considering its physiological background and the advantages of spraying with fertilizers containing calcium.

Phenolic maturity of grapes in terms of the site
(Dr. Zsolt Zsófi et al.)
The investigators of the Research Institute of Viticulture and Enology, Eger give an account of their research results. They studied the quantity and quality of phenolic components in blue-berried grapes. Based on these experiments, growers may expect to receive a methodology that they can use for determining the optimum time of harvesting more easily with higher accuracy.
