The SAPS subsidy system, originally announced to be only temporary, will be terminated at the end of 2013. From 2014, the beginning of the new EU budget period, the same direct subsidy scheme will be applied. In this part of the series on plant protection forecasting, the author deals with the methods (long and short-term ones) available for plum pests (winter moths, mottled umber plum sawflies, aphids, spider mites, as well as plum fruit moth, oriental fruit moth and San José scale). Furthermore, he gives useful information for decision making in control.

Trials with sunflower varieties for susceptibility to white rot

Stem and head white rot is one of the major diseases of sunflowers. The Directorate of Crop Production and Horticulture of the National Food Chain Safety Office (NÉBIH) carries out variety trials to study the susceptibility of varieties and variety candidates to the diseases. In 2011, 65 genotypes were involved in the trials, among them hybrids included in the national list of varieties, as standards and hybrids present on the EU list and without earlier experience in testing. The authors publish the most important conclusions drawn from the trial results.

The place with two harvests a year

The article guides readers to Uganda, a country in the middle of the African continent along the Equator. There in the production sites at more than 1800 m above sea level, temperature is suitable for accomplishing the whole cycle of vegetation of temperate fruit species (apples, pears and plums). Furthermore due to the intensive insolation, the cycle takes place quickly, allowing two harvests in apple orchards within a year.
