(Dr. László Bódis)

Agriculture and public employment
(Károly Papp)
The more and more successful Gödöllő Farming Days have offered a rich technical programme also this year. Being there early summer we could listen to several lectures, before visiting the field shows, about the agricultural situation, innovation, education – and why we mention this – about public employment and the options related also to agriculture. Károly Papp, that time secretary of state responsible for public employment in the Ministry of Interior (currently ministerial commissioner of re-structuring police-force) outlined the trends in public employment policy of the Government where agriculture would have a significant role with financial support via local governments. We publish the lecture about the remarkable initiative in a structured form, considering that its agricultural relations could affect your everyday work.

We sow about 15-20 kg maize seeds on a hectare field and harvest, from the same territory 7-8000 kg grains and around the equal amount of maize stalks. This is more than hundred times of the original mass. How can it be? Where does this huge amount of material come from? How can we repeat this amazing increase year by year in a sustainable way? We are seeking the answer to these and similar questions in the current and the next part of the ‘Farming course’.

Grapes are ripening
(Dr. Gábor Zanathy)
The seasons are rather extreme in our country. Therefore sugar content of grapes is very low in certain years while it is significantly high in other ones. As a consequence of climate change, it is presumed that temperature during the time of ripening will increase, ripening begins earlier and by this, sugar content of grapes will more and more frequently be higher resulting in heavy wines. We believe it is worth having an overview of the process of sugar accumulation and the impact of the season, production site, grown varieties and crop management.

Insight into the experience of grapevine protection in the season 2011/12
(Ágnes Kun)
The weather conditions unfavourable for pathogens allow professionals to reduce the number of chemical treatments and by that, to lower the pesticide load to the environment and increase the profitability of growing. In order to achieve that, it is essential that growers be aware of the environmental and pathological factors eventually affecting the basic plant protection situation. This is why the author from the Plant Protection and Soil Conservation Directorate of the Government Office of County Baranya highlights the most important conclusions having been drawn this year from pest management in vineyards.
