The Research Company for Medicinal Plants organised a conference on 8 May on the situation of the Hungarian medicinal plant sector and the prospects of development. Reporting about the event, firstly we refer to the introductory lecture of the director József Péter Pallos, following with the draft of the National Medicinal Plant Programme outlined by Miklós Szatmári. Finally, we briefly summarise the information given by the high officials of the ministries responsible for the topic.

Budapesti Corvinus University organised a conference in its Buda Campus on 9 May with the aim of evaluating, from the point of view of climate change, the challenges of military research, adaptation, risk mitigation and water management in Hungary. Further objectives were seeking alternatives and interpreting the recommendations in the light of the tools of mitigating the negative effects of climate change.

This year, at the end of May KITE organised a conference celebrating the fortieth anniversary of founding the company. The Hungarian Maize Club opened its “recruiting offices” in Aranybulla Zrt. at Székesfehérvár-Kisfalud and University of Debrecen on 15 and 16 May 2013, respectively. They invited maize growers of the country and the Carpathian basin for a competition for the fifth time.

Lajtamag Kft. has been operating for 20 years and annually organises its successful meetings with partners. This happened also this season when the anniversary gave special importance to the event held at Mosonudvar on 5 June. The programme highlighted a fodder plant, soya bean having been shadowed so far and the prospects of producing this crop.

It was already the tenth time that Bayer invited growers for a meeting. The event, organised at five locations, was marked by the 150-year-anniversary of founding Bayer Group. We asked Bayer’s former registration manager, currently the representative of the company for horticultural crops in the Western-Hungarian region, to sum up what was seen and heard at the meeting.

Cost-benefit relations of green peas and sweet corn

The authors from the Research Institute of Agricultural Economics (AKI) give an account of the economic situation of perhaps the most important vegetables, i.e. green peas and sweetcorn. They used the sectoral database of the pilot holding system of AKI to analyse the cost-benefit relations of the two crops accounting for the majority of Hungarian vegetable growing.

Budapest Corvinus University, Faculty of Horticultural Sciences hosted the scientific memorial session on 3 June 2013, commemorating the15th anniversary of the death of Miklós Faust. He was an investigator who laid great emphasis on solving research tasks in the different areas of fruit growing, putting scientific results into practice.

However, the intensively developing axillary shoots use abundant water and nutrients, leading to shadowing each other, preventing airflow and increasing the risk of diseases in the crop. On the other hand, they improve crop quality and the ripening of shoots with their high assimilation activity. No wonder, the question arises about how to handle the case of axillary shoots. AXIÁL invited farmers to the fields with the slogan indicated in the title in order to show the machines, essential in up-to-date crop production and the prospects of using them in the practice. The demonstration focused on the mechanisation of cattle husbandry and the related field crop growing, and took place at Beled, in the premises of ‘Előre Farmers’ Cooperative’ and the surrounding fields. Among the great number of machines and machine connections, according to the crop production character of our journal, we give an account of the novelties and machines of the field show, without striving for completeness, in text and pictures.
