Launching the water management topic, in this number of the journal, we publish some “aquatic” papers in order to raise interest. The role of water supply in field crop growing

Based on several-decade-long studies, the author draws the attention to the adverse agro-ecological effects on field crops. A new insect imposes risk to Hungarian fruit growing: spotted wing drosophila (Drosophila suzukii)

European fruit growing faces a new challenge of a harmful pest causing severe losses in crop quality and quantity, i.e. spotted wing drosophila. The fear is not in vain, because this pest appears within a short time with unexpectedly high population densities, in particular on soft and stone fruit species with thin fruit skin. This is why it is worth giving an overview of this pest, discussing its geographic distribution, biology, host plants and the options for observing and controlling it.

The use of fermented organic manure from ecological farms
In our days, it is necessary also in agriculture to apply novel solutions that allow the recycling of materials and energy resources entering the system and the coupling of the material and energy resources of crop production and animal husbandry. The article presents INEMAD project with the proposal for the input by a third pillar in addition to the above-mentioned ones, i.e. fermented organic manure produced during the processing of manures.

The Field Crop Section of the Quality Control Committee held its meeting
The Field Crop Section of the Quality Control Committee held its autumn and spring meetings on 6 December 2012 and 12 March 2013, respectively. The autumn session included 8 winter wheat, 4 winter barley and 1 triticale variety in the national list, while the spring meeting decided to do the same with the varieties of the following crops: winter rapes (22), maize (17), sugarbeet (10), soya bean (1), spring barley (2), hemp (2), oil radish (1), sorghum (4), potato (1) and chickpea (1). The most important data are published in a tabulated form.

After the meeting on 21 February in the Ministry of Agriculture, the “soybean people” decided to organise themselves and carry out their ideas. The initiators presented a ready plan. The civil initiation, not existing legally, undertook to launch a movement that, as a registered organisation, will be ready to represent the interests of soybean growers and other players of the sector.

Although the agricultural sector suffered the crisis less than the others, the future of the sector may be affected on the long run by more uncertainties. Lászlo Tömör, agricultural expert of Budapest Bank drew attention to the problems regarding succession on the conference of Deloitte and the Hungarian Association of Wheat Growers (GOSZ) organised in late February. The recent review of the issue by the bank revealed that the situation regarding the generation shift is of high concern.

“Let’s learn gene technology” (32) Breeding and growing glyphosate tolerant transgenic (GM) varieties

The previous part of the series outlined the transgenic herbicide strategy and briefly presented the situation of producing GM crops tolerant to glyphosate, glufosinate, sulfonylurea, imidazolinon and bromoxynil. Among them, only the transgenic varieties tolerant to the non-selective herbicides glyphosate and glufosinate are in commercial growing and trade. The press release about the “Walnut conference” organised by the State Fruit Growing Research Institute declares that Hungarian walnuts are better in internal quality and earlier in ripening than the leading global varieties. Väderstad Award 2013. Recognising the most innovative young growers

Väderstad founded an award with the slogan “Young farmers raise the standard”. The project called “Väderstad Award 2013” aims to seek young growers, raise awareness and encourage those young ones who are not only interested in, but also practically apply the new innovative farming methods that improve the efficiency, quality and outcome of management. The call was announced in Velence on 30 March 2013. In addition to representatives of the professional public, certain young growers were invited who are likely to be interested in the competition.
