The development programme, carried out in that factory manufacturing balers, were also dealt with. This part reports on the novelties in the mechanisation of handling and harvesting green forage and roughage presented for the first time for the professional public.

The operator of the tractor, the worker present at the site and the rural population shall also be protected from the diesel particles released by tractor engines. This is why the current part of the series dealing with air pollution by tractor engines presents the most efficient technique, i.e. diesel particle filtering (DPF). Certain procedures suited to the agricultural operation of tractor engines are described.

Väderstad AWARD 2013 – Introducing the most innovative young Hungarian farmers

Väderstad launched a call on 30 March 2013 called “Väderstad Award 2013” with the slogan “Young farmers raise the standard”. The results were announced and the awards handed over in the ceremony taken place in Hotel Magyar Király on 27 September 2013. The competition was initiated for several countries by the Swedish parent company Väderstad-Verken AB with the aim of seeking young growers, raise awareness and encourage those young ones who are not only interested in, but also practically apply the new innovative farming methods that improve the efficiency, quality and outcome of management.

A Forum for the Agreement of Hungarian Farmers in the Carpathian Basin. Report

The recent National Agriculture and Food Industry Exhibition (OMÉK) offered a rich programme for visitors. As a new feature, the Ministry of Rural Development gave an opportunity for farmers’ organisations over the border to introduce themselves in the pavilion of the ministry. It was a great success. Among the various programmes, Forum for the Agreement of Hungarian Farmers in the Carpathian Basin was an outstanding event. The article lets us have an insight into the most important topics raised there.

The previous part described the life cycle of the insect killing bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis and the way this tiny prokaryote kills insects. Gene technologists have learnt the tricks of the bacterium and used its genes for producing insect resistant GM varieties.

The position and spreading of grapevine roots in the soil

Crop quality and quantity are affected by parts of the vine both above and below soil surface. A field visit can easily give a view of the above-ground parts of the vines, but the location and extent of the roots are hidden from the eye. Though this article could not allow us to detect hidden things, the mysteries of the underground world of vineyards could become clearer.

Note for growers … about a controversial EU decision

According to the current EU requirements, by 2020, biofuels shall reach at least a 10% share in the total use of fuels. This obligation is or may involve a further development of the new industry because we have not come up to this level. Therefore, the recent decision of the European Parliament is surprising, wishing to limit such use to 6%. In relation to this topic, the current note outlines the Hungarian position, too.
