Soil cultivation, with even harder lessons to learn

The author deals with the climate phenomena, experienced from early spring to early summer of 2013, listing the following ones: dusting provoked by frost, the clogging of frost-dust, leaching of the dust till the nearest compact layer, adverse settlement, compacting of the seedbed, crusting of the clogged surface, thick crust formation, cracking, standing water caused by natural conditions and soil management. She also recommends methods to prevent and mitigate damages. The second part of the article presents the tasks to be performed in autumn, 2013 to improve soil conditions.

The theory of soil moisture regime and the options for preserving water in the practice

The author from the Institute for Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry, Centre for Agricultural Research, Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA ATK TAKI) summarises the bases of soil water regime and presents the role of soil in conserving moisture. Furthermore, he discusses the tillage operations in autumn that are the most suitable for preserving, later increasing soil moisture. In addition, he provides an overview of certain alternative tillage systems that are in particular useful to achieve this goal.

About European corn borer from the point of view of tillage

The author examined 160 samples of maize stem residues in six regions in autumn, 2012 and spring, 2013 during her studies on changing soil conditions. She concluded that the occurrence of larvae is primarily related to the quality of stem chopping. Larvae overwinter in long stem pieces even in ploughed soil, while no survived larvae could be found in stem parts cut shorter than 10 cm.

Participants agreed in jointly attending the Agri-Machine Show to be organised in January 2014.
