On 11 September 2013, farmers’ day called “Autumn in Gödöllő” was organised already for the 16th time. The event focused on the Hungarian situation regarding renewable energy resources, in particular the use of biomass. The article gives an insight into the lectures delivered there.
FOCUSING ON TILLAGE
Soil cultivation, with even harder lessons to learn

The author deals with the climate phenomena, experienced from early spring to early summer of 2013, listing the following ones: dusting provoked by frost, the clogging of frost-dust, leaching of the dust till the nearest compact layer, adverse settlement, compacting of the seedbed, crusting of the clogged surface, thick crust formation, cracking, standing water caused by natural conditions and soil management. She also recommends methods to prevent and mitigate damages. The second part of the article presents the tasks to be performed in autumn, 2013 to improve soil conditions.

The theory of soil moisture regime and the options for preserving water in the practice
The author from the Institute for Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry, Centre for Agricultural Research, Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA ATK TAKI) summarises the bases of soil water regime and presents the role of soil in conserving moisture. Furthermore, he discusses the tillage operations in autumn that are the most suitable for preserving, later increasing soil moisture. In addition, he provides an overview of certain alternative tillage systems that are in particular useful to achieve this goal.

About European corn borer from the point of view of tillage

The author examined 160 samples of maize stem residues in six regions in autumn, 2012 and spring, 2013 during her studies on changing soil conditions. She concluded that the occurrence of larvae is primarily related to the quality of stem chopping. Larvae overwinter in long stem pieces even in ploughed soil, while no survived larvae could be found in stem parts cut shorter than 10 cm.

Sweetcorn meeting. Report
Syngenta is the leading distributor of sweetcorn seeds in Hungary as over forty percent of the cropping area is sown with the company’s hybrids. We suppose that there are quite a lot even among graduated professionals that, belonging to a younger generation, possess superficial knowledge not only about the opening up of cotton capsules but even on cotton itself. It was already the tenth time that Bayer invited its partners to a meeting – this time on grapevines. Visitors were informed about Bayer’s pest management programme in grapes and the experiences of growing the crop in 2012. Furthermore, the company’s new fungicide Luna to be released in 2014 was also presented. Finally, the trailed and mobile combine harvesters distributed by KITE company were also on show.

The Research Institute of Viticulture and Oenology of Károly Róbert College invited growers interested in vine growing to a plant protection meeting. The event, presenting the technical novelties of the past two years, took place on Kőlyuktető near to Eger on 29 August 2013.
