VINE GROWING AND WINEMAKING
Liquid glass and grapes
(Dr. Gábor Zanathy)
The ecological vine-growers recommend water solution of potassium silicate, in other name potassium liquid glass, primarily to prevent powdery mildew and mitigation of the incidence of grey mould. However, according to literature potassium liquid glass can be also applied as a means of plant protection after hail, reducing population density of grape leaf rust mites and even for loosening bunches. This undoubtedly sounds great, but is liquid glass that versatile? What is its mode of action and what are the advantages and disadvantages, risks associated with its application? We try to give the answers to these questions.
