Cropping structure and our rape growing
(Dr. Pál Békési)
Cropping structure should be tailored to biological characteristics of field crops. However, in these days it is driven by market expectations and to an adverse direction. Sunflowers and rapes, ideally, should not follow only themselves but each other either for 4-5 years, because these two plants have various common pathogens presenting higher epidemiological risks. As it turns out from statistical data, this requirement cannot be satisfied as the area covered by these two crops has almost doubled in the past 8 years. On the short and medium run, only the development of pest management programmes can help decreasing the risk of diseases. However, on the longer run it is worthy to modify cropping structure with marketable products to a direction better suited to biological requirements.
