Maize at the threshold of the accession to the EU (Dr. István Csíbor)

Introductory thoughts concerning the importance of maize, the damages caused by Western corn rootworm, in the light of the accession to the European Union

Data on the cultural bases of maize production (Dr. Zoltán Menyhért, Adrienne Csúr Varga dr.)

The paper written by the scientists of the University “Szent István” does not and may not cover the whole production of maize. The objective was to focus on the importance of autumn tillage and sowing which allow good storage of winter precipitation. The authors have found that all cultural operations and decisions basically aim to know the place, the time and the type of variety to be planted, including the crop density. Additional objective lies in finding how to supply the selected varieties and plant number with water and nutrients as well as how to prevent the water and wind erosions and nutrient leaching. The authors emphasize that the farmer has to know everything about his land and the weather conditions of the region and to select himself the variety and the cultivation equipment depending on the above factors. Risks of the decisions made during the growing may be moderated with adequate expertise. The Reader gets some recent data for the improvement of this.

How are high maize yields born in the “small Iowa”? (Zoltán Nagy)

The author focuses on the particular production programme in Nak in county Tolna, being one of the maize growing districts with extremely good properties in Hungary. Gyula Soltész, director-general of the Agricultural Holding says that their motto is: “to have high yield with low costs”. Therefore, they had to find the most adequate methods and techniques and adapt them to the local conditions, from tillage to harvest. We also learn where they still have reserves for reducing the costs and for which factors no cheapness should be considered.

GrowHow management programme in maize (x) (Dr. Erik Czinege)

Kemira’s recommendation for fertilizer application in maize according to the intensity of production and the targeted yields

Monitoring genetic progress in maize variety tests (Dr. Dénes Szieberth)

In Hungary, three-year investigations are needed for the recognition of national list of varieties; then the survey and observation of shorter or longer period during the test made with the recognised maize variety are usually sufficient for understanding the major capacity of adaptation of the hybrids.

By summarizing the variety tests of the National Institute for Agricultural Quality Control (OMMI), the author describes the performance of Asgrow 043 (medium ripening) and Colomba (late ripening) hybrids and, by doing this, he reports on the several year results obtained with the accompanying reliable or less reliable varieties. The reported doubts and lessons are very informative for the selection of hybrids.

He internally feels the hidden threats to maize… (Zoltán Nagy)

How to grow maize, with success, even on areas where the Western corn rootworm, if not controlled, can cause damages of great economic importance and the precipitation volume does not reach 110 mm in the growing season? The answer including his own experiences is given by a farmer of Enying, Ferenc Mikó who harvested, in 2003, 7 t/ha of grain maize and 24,6 t/ha silage maize.

Control of pests with insecticide seed dressing (x) (Csaba Csorba) (x)

Recommendation for the management programme of Gaucho by Bayer CropScience in maize and sunflower.

Control of pests in ware maize (Dr. Géza Vörös)

Till the mid-1990, maize was considered as a crop which could be safely grown as for its pest management. Weed control and eventual soil disinfection meant protection of maize for the farmers. The author, a specialist of this field, thoroughly reports on the changed situation, the pests being an important source of risks and the possibilities of integrated pest management, including the formulations recommended for chemical control – in a tabulated form.

The DuPont solution: Steward® (x) (Károly Fazekas, Dr. Elemér Tóth, Dr. István Molnár)

Recommendation for the management programme of insecticide to be applied by „insectigation”.

Corner points for planning weed control in maize (Gabriella Benécs Bárdi dr., Ferenc Hartmann)

In the last one decade and a half, the changes in the system of conditions (land ownership, economics) of plant production, including maize growing have created, in Hungary, a wide range of the level of production management. This has also contributed to the great variety of the weed flora in the maize growing areas. At the same time, the number of authorized plant protection products has dynamically increased and the possibilities for weed management has also enriched. The authors thoroughly reports – as if it were for a handbook – on the corner points of integrated weed management in maize. In addition to focusing on the effects of the various cultural factors (crop rotation, tillage, nutrition, plant density, etc.), they describe the possible methods for chemical weed control, with particular attention to the proposed active substances of the plant protection products.

Though small, he has well learnt the “maize language”… (Zoltán Nagy)

Tibor Valler manages a family farm on 130 ha on the westward slopes of the Bakony. He says that maize, by all means, is the most profitable crop in this region. The good result can, however, only be achieved by strong conviction and technical “subtleness” based on good knowledge of the area. The article describes a good couple of them.

Let’s make all efforts! (x) (Géza Szabó, István Oláh)
